I like music. I really, REALLY like music. My posts here, on tumblr, youtube, pretty much anywhere that I really enjoy music. My favorite band in the world is They Might Be Giants, and beyond that, I think I have a pretty diverse music taste. Somehow, people on here even seem to be intrigued with my music taste. Here's a screenshot of my intense music folder:
Naturally, I look up a lot of music on youtube to listen to. And I know, it's the number one unwritten rule of the internet to not look at the comments section of pretty much any webpage, but sometimes I gotta look at something that isn't just the band's album cover for however long the song's duration is. You can find some pretty interesting (and by that I mean absolutely fucking sad) fellows that are very opinionated about the music they do and don't like, and you WILL hear about it whether you want to or not.
We can start with the type that post a comment like "I'm ___ years old and I listen to this!" The number is usually pretty small, as these people are usually pretty young. For the most part, too young to be on youtube. Though, me saying that is hypocritical since I've been futzing around online since I was 7 or 8. Anyway... these comments are harmless, for the most part. It's just a young child looking for validation because they listen to music that isn't intended for their age demographic. As long as they're pleasant about it, I don't really have a huge problem with these comments. That is, until they turn into...
"I'm ___ years old and I ONLY listen to REAL MUSIC!" is when these young children get a little bit older and a bit more cynical. Yeah, fucking Led Zeppelin is real music and only Led Zeppelin. Now, the definition of music can apply to pretty much anything that makes noise. It's totally an arbitrary thing what you classify as music, and the people that say they ONLY LISTEN TO REAL MUSIC just so happen to find generic dad-rock real music. Again, usually harmless, though they're a lot more annoying than the first.
Those two comments don't compare to "This isn't real music. This is shit. Why do people like this?". So many things bother me about these kinds of comments. They're usually from the cynical teenager group like the second example comment, and ideally, they'll grow out of this mindset. Lord knows I had to grow out of it. I mostly see these comments on the videos for really popular pop songs. Sometimes it'll be on rap, but it's a lot less prevalent there. It sure seems like the only people that condone this kind of comment are the bitter losers that actually make them, and that's just the fact of the matter that the people who leave comments like this are bitter losers. Good for you, you think you can judge whether or not something is actually music or not. You are shitting all over people doing nothing to you because they happen to enjoy a style of music you don't. You look really cool and I want to be your friend. I lied.
An example of someone with their head too far up their own ass to ever possibly grow out of this stupid phase is this dude right here. He's clearly well into his 20s. He made a video about his thoughts on Deathcore/Grindcore/Whateverthehellcore.
Now, let me explain. I don't like Deathcore/Grindcore/stuff of that sort at all. It just doesn't please me ears. But I know that while I don't like it, it's still music. I also don't like the progressive rock stuff that PMRants wants to shove down our throat as "real music", I don't know, I just think the genre is pretty boring. Rather than saying "THIS GENRE OF MUSIC ISN'T ACTUALLY MUSIC BECAUSE I DON'T LIKE IT!" I could just say "I don't like this genre of music." This way, nobody's being attacked, nobody's being targeted, and I don't look like a huge fucking snob, rather I look like someone simply sharing a harmless opinion about a genre of music. Ideally, people that have opinions about music like this should keep it to themselves anyway because nobody actually wants to hear their opinions when they went to look for a song of a particular genre that they enjoy. If you're looking up a song or genre just to shit on it, then you're missing the point of music entirely and should go to some music you do enjoy and shut the fuck up.
You may or may not be thinking now that I'm a bit of a hypocrite for attacking PMrants for his quite frankly wrong and stupid opinions about what music is and isn't. My ethic is this: if you're such an insufferable bitch about something as arbitrary and subjective as music taste, then I have no objections in acting the same way towards you. It's like when people go to videos where I include music I like in it and tell me my musical taste is bad, or that they hated a song I used and provided a bunch of reasons that do fuck all for me.
Take this misheard lyrics video I made to a song I enjoy for instance:
It isn't there anymore because whoever left the comment I'm talking about wimped out and deleted their own post, but they left a comment telling me that while they enjoyed the video itself and that the misheard lyrics were funny, they hated the song. They talked about how there's no rhythm, the singing's bad, the instruments are bad, it wasn't music, and so on. How am I supposed to respond to this? Ideally, I should not have responded at all. But since these people bug me so much and they think they are just so special, I decided to fuck with them. I said in response "I respect your opinion even if it's wrong". After this, this person flipped out, spewing out things about how opinions are subjective and how I was just so dumb to have said such a thing about someone else's taste. I just responded back with "Your opinion is wrong because it isn't mine. Duh." and after that, they did not respond and obviously deleted their own post. I wish I screencapped it, it was hysterical.
But it just goes to show what happens with these angry, bitter losers when someone won't just take their bullshit and pass it off as a 'subjective opinion' but rather use their own tactics against them. They break down.
I guess the point of all of this is that you should let people listen to what they want to listen to. You telling them that they're wrong and that they should stop is not only not going to do anything to change their minds, but it'll make you look like an idiot to absolutely everyone except you and your self important loser friends. Peace.
