NOTE: The rules regarding this Nuzlocke run can be found in Chapter 1.
In this part, I attempt to overcome my first major obstacle in my journey to completing this Nuzlocke. The following are my stats going into this chapter:
Badges: 0
Casualties: 0
Current Pokemon: 3
Sup Misty (L10 Butterfree)
ChuckEChiz (L11 Rattata)
AngryDragn (L13 Charmander)
With two pokemon that are weak to rock, and three whose main attacks can be resisted by rock types, the Pewter Gym will prove to be a huge challenge for me. Thus, I can only over-level this. I’ll need to be cautious as to not have my pokemon still be underleveled going into the gym.
So now I have three major things accomplished. Chuck knows Hyper Fang, AngryDragn has evolved, thus making him a bit sturdier, and Sup Misty is, well, decently leveled. I had no real expectations for him, since odds are Rock Throw would continue to one-shot him. I probably won’t have him in the party for terribly much longer anyway, unless I just keep getting terrible wild pokemon.
So after facerolling the trainer before him, I prepare for the moment of truth.
I lead with Sup Misty, since Geodude lacks any rock-type moves. I’ll need Chuck and Dragn for Onix. I’m hoping neither faint, but there are no guarantees.
I open up with a Confusion crit, safely one-shotting Geodude. No fuss, no muss.
Now on to Onix. I switch to Chuck, since he’s probably the most disposable of my party outside of the one pokemon that would probably get one-shot.
I open with a tail whip, in case I need to switch to Dragn. Onix opens with a rock tomb, which deals about a good quarter of my health. My next attack I use is Hyper fang (remember why I level Chuck so high?). It deals quite a bit less damage than Rock Tomb did to me, even with my tail whip. Onix uses bind, which does virtually no damage. On the other hand, it prevents me from escaping for a few turns, which means I may have to have Chuck tough it out. I throw out another hyper fang, only for it to miss. Bind continues to slightly reduce my health. I use Hyper Fang again, and Onix uses bind on me again. His health is still higher than my own. I continue using Hyper Fang. Onix uses tackle, then bind, then tackle. None of his attacks crit. I finally whittle his health down to zero, with barely any health remaining on Chuck. I got really lucky this match. Had any of his attacks (except bind) crit, Chuck would have died. Had he used Rock Tomb again, I would have died. Had he used a tackle instead of a bind, I would have died. So thank you for showing mercy, Brock. I didn’t even have to scrub all of the floors in Hyrule!
So with Brock defeated, the next chunk of the game should be a walk in the park. Not only will the trainers up to Dongles and Misty be much easier than Brock, but I’ll be able to get up to 4 new pokemon before I face Misty, and 3 before I face my rival. So after rolling through the trainers on Route 3, let’s see what my first potential new Pokemon will be!
Not bad, not bad. A flying type will help balance my roster (Butterfree doesn't count).
So now we continue into Mt. Moon to get another pokemon. And speaking of flying types...
So now I have three flying types in my party. Fun fun. Sup Ash and Batwoman?? join the party. (Editor’s note: After nicknaming my Zubat, I learned that there is no Batwoman, but there is a Batgirl. Shows how much I know about superheroes.)
So now, GRINDING TIME.
And now that my party is properly leveled, and by “properly leveled”, I mean “stupidly overleveled”, I venture into the mountain, making sure to heal regularly. A few trainers almost give me issues due to their pokemon versus mine. One had two electric pokemon (keep in mind I have 3 flying pokemon out of the 5 I have), and the other had 3 rock-type pokemon, which I still have some issues with, even though they’re much lower level than the ones that Brock had. All I can say is thank God the Level 16 Raticate of doom was omitted from the remake.
So with Mt. Moon behind me, it’s almost time to close out this chapter of my journey.
But first, let’s see what my last Pokemon will be?
...It’s something, I guess. Hopefully the next route will allow me to replace something. Oh, well. Dilos joins the party.
So with that, I close out this chapter. Will I get a grass pokemon to help me with Misty, or will I once again be going in with no type advantages? Will I even get that far, or will something shock me along the way? Find out next time on Darkie does Nuzlocke!
