NOTE: The rules regarding this Nuzlocke run can be found in Chapter 1.
In this part, I tackle a gym that will only present some degree of challenge due to the absurd number of flying types that I’ve accumulated. Additionally, I will be using images less frequently this time around, as in an earlier entry, someone observed that they were too frequent, and I couldn’t help but agree. There is no reason that, for example, I need 2-3 images to show me catching a pokemon. So with that said...

I come out of the Cerulean Pokemon center, freshly earning my CascadeBadge with surprisingly little issue. My adventure begins today by starting to head to Vermilion City. I head out the building in the Northeast corner of the city, only to be faced with the Rocket grunt blocking the way. I easily mow through him, taking out his Machop in one shot, and his Drowzee in two.
I then go through the underground path, then down the route to Vermilion City, cutting each and every trainer in the way, with my pokemon sustaining nonthreatening damage. At this point, I come to what could be a big decision: Do I try to catch a wild pokemon on that route, or do I wait until I can fish/surf? After thinking it over, I decide to take a gamble: After all, grass pokemon will be harder to come by as time goes on, and Pidgey wouldn’t be a bad replacement flying type either (in fact, I’d much rather have a Pidgot than a Fearow). The other Pokemon is a Meowth, which I’d probably save as a backup pokemon. And I’ll likely get a Tentacool/Tentacruel from surfing later on anyway.
So I walk into the grass, find a wild pokemon, and Jackpot. I get a wild Oddish, the best result I could ask for. I forget to open with Sup Misty, so I switch to him, put oddish to sleep, get a few tackles in, then catch it with little issue.
So with that, Blaze It joins the party (I’m very mature when it comes to naming, in case you haven’t noticed).
So with that out of the way, I work on taking out the trainers on the route east of Vermilion City, taking extra caution not to step into the grass, as I’m not quite ready to go for a pokemon yet (In fact, I think I’ll refrain from doing so, as I have a 75% chance of getting a pokemon I already have, and I don’t have a no-dupe clause in my rules). So after cautiously running around the beating all of the trainers on the route, I make my way towards my next objective area: Diglett Cave.
Diglett Cave is a pretty scary area in a Nuzlocke run. While the cave is mostly populated by, surprise surprise, Diglett, there is also a few Dugtrio, which are about the same level as my highest level pokemon. In normal runs, they manage to take out at least 1-2 of my party. But I must go ahead bravely.
...But first, I switch Dilos for Blaze it, because quite frankly, Dilos is almost comically useless. And I might as well level him a bit as well. So after getting him to level 18, he learns Sleep Powder. And guess the one reason I kept Sup Misty in my party? You guessed it. But since I’m worried about one-shotting a Diglett with Absorb, I’m keeping Sup Misty in my group for a little longer. So I head to Diglett Cave to hopefully find a Diglett, although if I could catch a Dugtrio, I certainly wouldn’t be complaining.
So I come across a Diglett, thank goodness. And it’s also a pretty high level one (22 to be exact), so I shouldn’t have to worry about grinding either.
So after getting a Sleep Powder off on it, Sup Misty lays down the tackles. Diglett woke up and got a Fury Swipes attack which lowered Sup Misty to about half health, but thankfully, I was able to get off another Sleep Powder and capture it before it was able to do any more damage. So with that, Shortstack joins the party.
I worry about Shortstack, since it has piss for hit points and defense. I’m really hoping that I can keep it around for a long time, since it really is a strong ground type.
Needless to say, I continue on to the S.S. Anne, where I plan on getting plenty of experience for my group.
And after fighting a few trainers, I get careless and run into Dongles by accident. Whoops.
Unfortunately, I had Blaze It leading, so I had to make an emergency switch-out to Chuck to deal with his Pidgeotto. He switches to his own Raticate, so I switch to AngryDragn, who takes him out with little problem. He then switches to Wartortle, who I counter with Blaze It. Unfortunately, Blaze it gets almost killed, so I get forced to switch to Sup Ash before I can take out Wartortle. His last pokemon is Kadabra, who I take out with Batwoman??. So with that accident accounted for, time to deal with the rest of the trainers on the boat.
Thankfully, none present any real threat to me. In addition to getting a decent amount of level-ups, Blaze It evolves into Gloom. After getting my Cut HM, I go back to Vermilion City for some grinding to evolve ShortStack before the Vermilion Gym.
So with ShortStack evolved, I can progress on. I easily blow through the trainers in the Vermilion Gym (although the irritating trash puzzle, not so much, and come face-to-face withA FIRE SUMO my third gym battle.
Lt. Surge opens with Voltorb. While I could probably sweep him with ShortStack, I decide to save her energy for Raichu, and start with AngryDragn instead. I open with ember, while Voltorb opens with SonicBoom. This is one of the reasons I decided to save ShortStack for later: Moves like SonicBoom are devastating to a pokemon with a low base HP stat.
He then switches to Pikachu. I open with Ember, while Pikachu, with almost no health remaining, opens with Thunder Wave. Lt. Surge then pulls out a Super Potion and gets Pikachu back to full. I manage to get through the paralysis and hit him with Ember again. On the third turn, Pikachu uses Double Team. I get lucky and not only break through my Paralysis, but also get him with Ember, taking him down for the count. So with that, only one pokemon remains on his team: Raichu. ShortStack’s moment of truth has arrived.
ShortStack opens with Dig, while Raichu opens with Double Team. Since Raichu comes with two electric attacks, quick attack, and double team, he only has two options that could ever do anything. So he tries to use Quick Attack on me, only for it to miss because ShortStack is still underground. So Shortstack comes back up with a vengeance, disregarding Raichu’s increased evasiveness and one-shotting it with Dig, leading to a very anticlimactic final battle.
So I walk away with a ThunderBadge and yet another TM that I probably won’t actually use. I heal up my pokemon and close out this chapter of my journey.
Can anyone dent, much less stop my roster? Will I keep getting lucky with wild pokemon? Will I ever figure out the correct number of images to use in these entries? Find out next time, on Darkie Does Nuzlocke!
