Here are a few tips I've learned about writing so far.
1. Similes and metaphors are like a pox on humanity. Avoid them like the plague.
2. Run-on sentences are caused by not knowing when to split a clause into two separate parts combined with a lack of basic punctuation and although they express complete thoughts like any proper complete sentence should they are usually much too long and can be divided up into much smaller segments with relative ease which you should know how to do if you are any kind of decent writer..
3. Speaking of which. Punctuation, is key? Just be! sure you know how; to use it!
4. Overuse, specifically of commas, especially to separate clauses, many of which can be expressed in different ways, looks terrible, complicates sentence structure, and, in general, makes reading really, really, really painful.
5. If you're going to use scholarly words, don't be a gynecomastia about it.
6. "Context is key, of course, and can make or break an entire idea," whispered Tails as he moved his ruby lips towards Sonic's turgid crotch.
7. Fragments and run-ons. Should be easily avoidable. In most cases.
8. Lastly, be sure that each sentence forms a complete thought. That way you won't
