As a raging fanboy of AC/DC ever since I first heard Thunderstruck washing my dad's car with the radio on when I was 14 or so, I felt it was my civic duty to make a comment or two about the latest news about them.
So I guess you guys have heard about the crazy shit going on with the band right now.
Poor Malcolm Young has gotten dementia and short term memory and can no longer play and he had to quit the band. Thats so sad. He's one of the founding members along with Angus and has been with the band since the beginning. He didn't even make it on the newest album they're putting out. Luckily his nephew Stevie Young came in to replace him and I wish him the best. He has a big spot to fill.
PLUS Phil Rudd the drummer got arrested for attempting to hire a hitman to kill 2 men. The charges were dropped but he's still gonna be put in jail for 7 years probably for threatening to kill. Plus they have him on drug charges too.
So it looks like the band is gonna need a new drummer as well. Man 2014 has just not been their year.
On a lighter note they released the single of their album Rock or Bust which is called Play Ball. I heard it on the radio yesterday and here's my honest review of the song.
I'm listening to it as we speak and my first impression is it sounds a lot like Moneytalks. Then again most people will tell you ALL of AC/DC's song sound the same anyway and thats not too far from the truth. But hey, they all rock.
The production and the mix sounds really slick and reminiscent of their Back In Black days while the tone of the guitar sounds more like The Razor's Edge album and after hence making it sound even more like Moneytalks.
The stings and riffs that Angus throws into the song are pretty cool and of course the solo is pure Angus goodness.
And as old and wore out as Brian Johnson's voice is he still belts it out like he's 20 something. I actually believe his vocals have improved some over the years. If you remember The Razor's Edge era he sounded as if he was Donald Duck with a cold.
Didn't stop Thunderstruck from sounding awesome though
But about the time they put out Stiff Upper Lip his voice was changing yet again and it kind of smoothed out over the years and by the time Black Ice came out it had reached a whole new tone which I enjoy thoroughly.
But back to the song. The lyrics are typical "lets have a party" silliness that's in most ACDC songs. And I feel that theres no better music for just plain no bullshit rocking out in a bar room and starting a fight than any of ACDC's wonderful tunes.
Now the con of the song. The only thing I really kind of don't like about Play Ball is that its not really as memorable as something like Back In Black,Highway To Hell,Thunderstruck, Shook Me All Night Long or even Rock and Roll Train. The starting riff doesn't really hit you and make you go YEAAAAH FUCKING ACDC BEOTCH like those songs did. I mean you can tell it IS ACDC but it just seems like one of their filler songs made to take a spot in the album.
I'm hoping that the album itself has some stronger tracks on it with some more memorable sounding hooks, riffs, and such that I love these boys for.
Overall, I LIKE Play Ball. But I don't LOVE it. If i hear it on the radio again YEAH I'll crank it up despite my truck's TERRIBLE radio. But if I come across it on the new album I'll probably skip it and see what else is on the CD.
If you want to hear Play Ball for yourself here you go. Make your own decision and lemme know what you think
