Stuart K Reilly's Skunkarama - What is HITFILM and why should I care? A video editor review

Ok first off. I'm a Vegas user. Always have been. My favorite is Vegas 7 because its fast, simple, doesn't use much resources, and doesn't make my computer fan sound like its about to take off and fly like a turbine engine.

BUT. Recently I found this other video editor that I had never heard of until 2014. It goes by the name Hitfilm.

Now heres the thing about hitfilm. Basically what it is is a combination of an nle video editor (like vegas, premiere, final cut) and a visual effects app (after effects) as well as a manipulator of 3d models assuming your model is rigged correctly.

I was interested in this software because from what I could tell it was like After Effects only much simpler in design and made much more like a standard video editor with a simple timeline and effects menus and a media library all perfectly placed where you can get to them easily without many clicks.

Check this shit out.

Yes that is a 3d model in whats basically its own 3d space where you can manipulate things you put in the composite shot.
And you can add effects TO that model or add planes over them with effects on them as I did to make really nice effects. Both constructive and destructive.

You have two basic editors and they both are pretty easy to get the hang of. The Video Editor and the Composite Shot.

The editor is where you would do everything you're used to doing in a video editor. Make splits, do chopping and all the good stuff.

In the composite shot you make a video within the editor to edit over. You can still put videos inside the composite and edit them inside it too which is useful.

Masking is here and its very similar to vegas in the way you click on spots to make little markers.

And the biggest thing that makes this a super useful tool is course the effects.

There are a shitload of them. So much so it has its own search function so you can wade through them all. A few like the particle simulator have UNLIMITED possibilities of what kind of effects you can make out of it YOURSELF. Like I've made a dust trail behind a car with it. And the 3rd version of Hitfilm is supposed to have even more effects I've only tried Hitfilm 2.

We talking gunfire, regular fire, lighting and lightning, lasers, particles, blood, and a fuckton of more stuff. Also. did I mention this all comes WITH the editor? You dont have to download plugins for it all the cool effects are THERE. And of course you can do the fancy colors and eye rape stuff.

AND if you just can't get the hang of it OR you want those same effects within your favorite editor. Hitfilm's download ZIP you get from their website comes with plugins for every major editor. That means Hitfilm effects for VEGAS,PREMIERE,FINAL CUT, and others.

I have tried these in Vegas 13 and they give you a lot of the options the native versions do. Careful though because you CAN set options in these effects that will slow your computer to a crawl

Now the downside to this editor. It crashes.....a lot..... but I've found that just about every editor crashes at some point no matter what you're doing. Now they MAY have fixed this in Hitfilm 3 but HF2 crashes like a bitch. Luckily it autosaves.

Also it seems the cracks for this editor are hard to find and they break every time the editor gets an update. So do yourself a favor and if you find a crack, DONT UPDATE.

I'll be providing download links to hitfilm, the plugins, and the cracks in the near future so be on the lookout for that.

For now you can get the free trial of Hitfilm to get you started here
http://hitfilm.com/download
Also FXhome themselves have a LOT of helpful tutorials on Youtube that can get your started if the interface is a little foreign to you or you want to know "how do I effect at ____"

Oh and did I mention you can get it for MAC?
