Grease Witherspoon Blog - In Defense of Spider-man 3

I'll try to keep this brief as I've already discussed the topic of Spider-man 3 on this forum a while back.

I just rewatched the Spider-man film trilogy and while Spider-man 3 isn't near as good as the first two I still really enjoy it. Sure, Spider-man 3 is messy, convoluted and is far from perfect. I'll start by going over some of the problems I had with the film.

Topher Grace was a terrible choice to play venom. I liked him on that 70s show but Venom is supposed to be a badass and he's just too scrawny and his voice isn't manly sounding enough. Not to mention Topher grace looks way too similar to Toby Maguire. But Topher Grace's performance as Eddy Brock was actually pretty good. He made me want to punch him and Brock is supposed to be an unlikeable character. At the same time Eddy Brock felt like a well developed character in the movie and his actions made sense. The venom scenes were pretty lame though. It feels like they really wasted the opportunity to make venom totally badass by shoving him in this movie that already had too much going on. It's also worth noting in Spider-man 1 they mentioned eddy brock was already working at the bugle but in spider-man 3 he says he just started there which is the only continuity error I know of in the series.

Peter pushing Mary Jane was really unnecessary. Spider-man is supposed to be a hero and it's okay for him to be depressed, angsty or maniacal when he's under the power of the black suit but they didn't need to go that far with it. They had already made their point and they could have cut that whole scene. And the gwen stacy in the film really didn't have anything to do with gwen stacy the character in the comics but whatever.

Everyone loves to complain about the emo hair but I thought it was hilarious and fit the melodramatic comedic tone of the movie. Spider-man 3 is like watching a hilarious cheesy soap opera with some good characters, good messages and really impressive action sequences spliced in. I think that's not too far off from the tone of the comics. The first two spider-man movies were far better than any of the spider-man comics I've read in terms of writing but the third one was just slightly better than the comic writing.

But honestly Spider-Man 3 is better than a lot of the spider-man comics as far as characterization is concerned. Sandman was incredibly 1-dimensional in the comics but in the movie he had a good motivation and the relationship between him and peter parker was a lot more complex. Sandman struggled with taking responsibility for his mistakes and whether or not he should let his mistakes define him. He also loved his ill daughter and that fueled him to steal as opposed to him just being a mustache twirling jerk. And the movie ended on a really strong note with Peter learning about forgiveness and redemption. The movie had a point and the plot did build to that even if there were some pacing issues and bumps along the way.

I honestly liked everything they did with James Franco as Harry Osborne except the part where he forces mary jane to break up with peter parker. But even though that part was odd and poorly handled at least it was hilariously cheesy and melodramatic. Sometimes I just like to laugh at things that are over the top.

And personally I found Amazing Spider-man to be a really dull and unnecessary reboot. Spider-man 3 is a lot more entertaining in pretty much every way than Amazing Spider-man. Amazing takes such a middle of the road approach that its boring and it goes out of its way to be different than the Raimi Spider-man origin story to the point where it's just the same sorts of beats but less interesting and less sensical. Garfield and Emma stone had good chemistry but Garfield wasn't nearly as likeable as Toby Maguire nor was he as believable. The lizard was really lame, not cool looking and 1 dimensional. Amazing Spider-man did have a few nice action sequences though. But for the most part amazing spider-man is so sterile and boring.

So yes Spider-Man 3 is a flawed gem but it has lots of laughs, fun action sequences and some nice down to earth moments. I think people are especially harsh towards it because the first two were such great movies. It's also worth noting that Spider-man 3 did very well at the box office and received decent reviews albiet not as strong reviews as the first two received.

Spider-man arguably started the superhero movie craze. After X-men and spider-man were such huge hits a ton of super hero movies started coming out as a response and now the market is flooded with them and there is no signs of the trend stopping.
