Most people know Steve Burns from his time on the hugely popular kids show Blues Clues. But not everybody is aware of Steve's musical career after he left the show in 2002.
So why did Steve Burns leave Blues Clues? Well Steve was loosing his hair and the producers of the show wouldn't let him shave his head. Burns speaks fondly of his time on Blues Clues and he is surprised at the numerous strange and dark rumors about why he left the show. Steve went on a talk show along with the producers of Blues Clues to show everyone he wasn't dead or on drugs or whatever. Below is a picture comparison of his time on Blues Clues vs his more modern look.
I remember seeing an interview with Steve on MTV where he said he's been playing music all his life. And on Blues Clues he did a lot of singing. He also said he fell in love with the flaming lips. One night he was at a party and he heard some of their music for the first time. He was so taken aback by it that he left the party and immediately went to a record store and bought their albums.
The opening track 'Mighty Little Man' is fitting because Steve Burns is short at 5"6 but undeniably mighty.
Steve contacted the flaming lips during the making of his album and they decided to help him produce his first album Songs for Dustmites (2003). I loved it from the first listen. I was probably a sophomore or Junior in high school at the time.
It has a nice indie pop rock sort of vibe and a lot of the lyrics are seemingly told from the perspective of a superhero. There are also some sad and introspective moments in the album. It feels like a natural progression from his work on blues clues because while it's certainly more mature and experimental Steve maintains his kid-friendly image throughout. There are some songs on the album that are better than others but even the songs I don't love are still pretty good. It manages to be a very diverse and yet incredibly cohesive album at the same time. It's called songs for dustmites because Steve Burns was fascinated by dustmites after learning about them. But it should be called Songs for Superman since there are so many references to superman and super heroes on the album.
In 2009 Steve released Deep Sea Recovery Efforts under the name Steve Burns and the Struggle. I just recently got into this album but from my first few listens I think it's really good. There is less diversity than Songs for Dustmites had but I think it's more consistent. It's a bit more noisy and faster paced than his first album but it should appeal to most fans of his first album.
Burns also appeared in an episode of Law and Order and did some voice overs for commercials when he was an up and coming actor before Blues Clues. Aside from his musical career he has been in a few independent films including the Flaming Lips film Christmas on Mars which I have yet to see.
And yes, he still has one of the red couches from Blues Clues. In an interview I saw him drag the couch on wheels into a park in new york to sit down on it during his interview.
Bonus: A bizarre17 minute bit where Steve discusses his fame, going on a bad date with a model/stripper, make a wish foundation and crashing a kids birthday party dressed as Steve.
