NOTE: The rules regarding this Nuzlocke run can be found in Chapter 1.
In this part, I kick Team Rocket out of the Silph Co. building and attempt to win a Marsh Badge.

I start my journey by immediately flying back to Fuchsia City and heading south. I want my wild Tentacool! So I defeat a swimmer located at the shore, and start surfing back and forth. I eventually come across a Tentacool, and it’s the perfect level at level 29. I put him to sleep and throw a pokeball, catching him with no issue.
So with that, Hen Tie joins the party, and replaces Geyser. I grind for a little to get him a level up, evolving him into a Tentacruel. With that, I return to Saffron City to deal with Team Rocket. My attack on the building goes in three phases: Phase 1: Without using the card key, defeat every grunt in the building, getting the card key in the process. This succeeds without any issue. Phase 2: Use the card key to get rid of the remaining grunts. Once again, no issues. Phase 3: Find the right teleport pad to reach Giovanni on the 11th floor. This is more tedious than anything. After finally finding the correct teleport pad, I run into guess who?
...Yep, THIS guy. He didn’t even bother dealing with the grunts infiltrating the building, he just wanted to battle me. I might as well put him out of his misery. He leads with Pidgeot, while I lead with ShortStack. I open with Rock Slide, which causes it to flinch. I use another Rock Slide, bringing a quick end to it. He switches to Blastoise, while I switch to Blaze It. I hit it with Sleep Powder, then absorb. He switches to Growlithe, causing me to switch to Hen Tie. His Growlithe uses Flame Wheel, doing jack shit to me. I proceed to one-shot him with Surf. Dongles switches to Exeggcute, while I switch to AngryDragn. Flamethrower one-shots Exeggcute. Dongles brings his Blastoise out again, causing me to bring out Blaze It again. He hits with Bite, causing me to flinch. I then try to get him to sleep again, but miss, I try another time and get him to sleep, with Blaze It hanging on at only about half health. I then absorb him to death, coming up to about half health (Once I get Petal Dance, I’m replacing Absorb with Giga Drain). He then switches to Alakazam, his final pokemon. I switch to ShortStack to take advantage of his piss poor defense (This will also be a good time to gauge how well I’ll do in the Saffron Gym). I manage to take him out with two Slashes (I was hoping to one-shot him), thus ending this battle. While it’s good that I passed through this battle, it does not bode well for the Saffron Gym, where I’ll have to deal with an Alakazam that is 8 levels higher than the one I just faced.
I then get Lapras from the guy nearby (who I’ll only use as an HM slave if I lose my surfers), and go back to the 9th floor to heal. Time to deal with Giovanni.
He opens with Nidorino, while I open with RNGsus. RNGsus one-shots Nidorino with no issue. For some odd reason, Giovanni switches to Nidoqueen, who gets 2-shot by RNGsus. He switches to Kangaskhan, while I switch to AngryDragn. Kangaskhan gets 2-shot, while AngryDragn sustains relatively little damage. He finally uses Rhyhorn, which is instantly killed by Hen Tie. Giovanni Retreats and I acquire a Master Ball, which I probably won’t end up using, unless I get really lucky with an encounter in the future.
I heal and head to the Fighting Dojo. I decide to let Hen Tie fight the underlings, since needs the experience. I burn through them with no issues. I then bring out RNGsus to deal with the Karate Master. He then one-shots both Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan.
And with that, I heal once more and head to the Saffron Gym. While I initially plan on facerolling every trainer in the group, I get hit with a very, very cruel surprise. One of the channelers in the gym has a Gastly. I open the battle with Check Em, who uses Fly. However, this gives Gastly a chance to use Destiny Bond. I can’t do jack shit other than hit him with Fly, taking both his life and Check Em’s. So before I deal with Sabrina, I must first pay respects to my brave warrior.
(A screenshot of me releasing Check Em was supposed to be here, but something happened to it. Damn.)
Rest In Peace, buddy.
Sup Ash comes back into the party.
I was hoping to use Check Em’s speed against some of Sabrina’s pokemon, but sadly, I lack that fortune. Grinding won’t do me much help, so I charge into this battle with 2 pokemon being weak against her Pokemon (Hen Tie and Blaze It) and 1 whose attacks her pokemon resist (RNGsus).
Sabrina opens with Kadabra, while I open with AngryDragn. I one-shot him with Wing Attack. Easy enough. Sabrina switches to Mr. Mime, Wing Attack crits and one-shots him, which is a relief, since Reflect would have made things very unpleasant, very fast. She switches to Venomoth, who, as you can imagine, gets 1-shot with Flamethrower. Now for the moment of truth. She switches to Alakazam, while I switch to ShortStack. I open with Magnitude on a wing and a prayer. Surprisingly, ShortStack gets the first move (despite her and Alakazam having the same speed base, and ShortStack being 1 level lower). The full fury of Check Em’s spirit is invoked, and I get a whopping Magnitude 9, giving her Alakazam no chance to even get a hit in.
So with a very bittersweet win, I close this chapter with Cinnabar Island in the crosshairs. Will Sup Ash carry on the legacy that Check Em left behind? Will the Cinnabar Gym be laughably easy with Hen Tie at the helm? Is Check Em’s death a sign of thing to come? Find out the answers to these questions and more next time on Darkie Does Nuzlocke!
